Chuck Fadely has a number of fantastic tips for journalists shooting video for the first time. Many of these, such as not vocalizing during an interview, not stepping on a subject talking, and holding shots for extra time, take practice. Today’s journalist should be learning these tricks of the trade with any video equipment available.

For me as a blogger/citizen journalist, I don’t have time to do a bunch of editing. Some videos tell the story by themselves, sometimes you don’t hear the questions asked, and other times I interact with the subject. Why not mix it up? Recording sound separately means you work with a staff who has time to edit your video/audio… and also means you have to carry extra equipment.
